Pearland City Council approved a resolution at the end of 2009 declaring Pearland as a "Green City". They outlined plans to operate in an environmentally friendly way aiming for results in the reduced consumption of energy and natural resources.

Victory Over Japan Day is celebrated around the world on various days between the last week of August and the first week in September. It is the celebration of the end of World War II. 

September 2nd the Alvin VFW Post 5327 sponsored a remembrance ceremony in front of Alvin City Hall.  Alvin Police Officers James Edwards (Marine Veteran), Cpl. Shawn Gilcrease, Officer Roger Breaux and Alvin Police Chief Merkel, VFW members, former military members and Alvin residents placed wreaths and a folded flag atop the VFW Memorial in front of the Alvin City Hall.

Girls Scouts Beautify Elementary School

Girl Scouts of troop 27038 are working on their Silver Award service project, beautifying Lawhon Elementary garden area. Troop member and former student of the elementary school April Nguyen encouraged the project 

when she saw the need after last winter devastated the outside areas and several trees are infected with beetles. Each troop member is donating 40 hours of her time to help make the outdoor space beautiful.

Pearland Theater Guild Has a New Home

The Pearland Theater Guild was established in 2010 to enrich the local community. They are considered a semi-professional guild lighting up the cultural arts at their intimate new venue, the Ernest Holley Memorial Theater, located at 326 Fellows Road with

seating for 55 people. The guild has become a large part of the community since they began. Each year they host Pearland Idol which has been sold out well in advance for each performance. Being a non-profit organization, it is also a fundraiser. This year they are adding a new fundraiser during September called Beauty Shop Queen and the winner will receive free ad space in their play

A New School for a New Year

Alvin ISD and the surrounding communities are growing rapidly! This year will be the inagural year for Glenn York Elementary School, the newest of 14 elementary schools in the district. Everything is new this year. New children, new packpacks, and a brand new school for children from parts of the fast-growing local community, as well as Southern Trails, the Southgate and Southfork neighborhoods, and a small area west of County Road 48 and south of Broadway. The recently completed 96,297-square-foot building at 2720 Kingsley and opened for the first time with the commencement of classes Monday, Aug. 22.
