Some cast fishing lines in it or go exploring for tadpoles, but the American Canal is not a bayou or stream drifting by Sedona Lakes. Long before the beautiful new homes in this master-planned community were built, the American Canal (formally known as the American Rice Canal) was bringing water from the Brazos River to the thirsty farmland of Brazoria County.
Today, it also irrigates golf courses and plant nurseries and provides water to various industrial customers of the Gulf Coast Water Authority. It is a source for drinking water for many communities.
